The company, Affectiva, is one of those working on the construction of such systems. They have compiled a vast body of data consisting of six million video faces collected in 87 countries, allowing an engine of artificial intelligence to be tuned for true expressions of emotions in nature and to take into account cultural differences in the emotional expression.

Using computer vision, speech analysis and in-depth learning, they classify facial and vocal expressions of emotions. There are still some challenges to be addressed: how to form such multimodal systems? And how to collect data for less common emotions, such as pride or inspiration?

Hassan Hachem underscores “Nevertheless, the field is moving so fast that we can expect the technologies around us to become emotionally sensitive in the next five years.” They will read and respond to human cognitive and emotional states, just as humans do. Emotional AIs will be rooted in the technologies we use every day, working in the background, making our technological interactions more personalized, relevant, authentic and interactive. It's hard to remember what it was before you had tactile interfaces and speech recognition. We will end up feeling the same way with our emotion-sensitive devices.

Communication: There is a lot of evidence that we are already processing our devices, especially the conversational interfaces, in the same way that we treat each other.
